About the Item
Iconic Moody Portrait of a young Yves Saint Laurent photographed and signed by Marie Cosindas in 1968. Images of this sitting by Cosindas when he was in his prime helped in launching YSL Rive Gauche brand (and licensees) with Mssr. Berge at the helm.
It helped to establish his brand by depicting the care free sexuality of the period. This color saturated image is nowadays very common in advertising but in the period it was shocking, and importantly in established the idea that the right clothes and accessories could sell youth, beauty and sexual attraction.
This special image was used in large scale to decorate the earliest interiors of the YSL Rive Gauche boutique in New York for over 10 years.
The image shows a young and fit St Laurent in pressed pink silk satin, cross legged and barefoot, staring defiantly into the lens on a bright crimson ground which is a color he returned to throughout his career. The image is so incredibly removed from nerve wracked child genius created by the press from Dior days, just a few years earlier. It helped to launch the concept and cult of the "celebrity designer" which continues to this day.
From the estate of a business contact who helped launch YSL Rive Gauche in the USA. 1968, Collections in MOMA , the Getty Museum has same image.
Gifted to an important American business partner who help to launch YSL Rive Gauche into the US market. Actual Image measures 6.75" x 5".
Additional information: Marie Cosindas Hyper color pioneer of the painterly color photograph. For this portrait of fashion designer St. Laurent, Cosindas used Polacolor film that developed instantly, allowing her to see and adjust the density of colors with a variety of filters during the sitting.
Set against a vivid red backdrop, St. Laurent cuts a formidable figure in his freshly ironed pink silk shirt. An enlargement of this photograph, made the year his first boutique in New York opened, graced the walls of that store for ten years.
