Impressive Hand-Tinted Albumen Mammoth Plate Print of Basilica San Marco Venice
About the Item
Impressive Hand-Tinted Albumen Mammoth Plate Print of Basilica San Marco in Venice,
circa 1880. Attributed to Paolo Salviati (1818-1894).
Possibly the largest photographic image of this object. It is composed of two large prints carefully aligned together in the center on the mount. It has not been inspected out of the frame, in order not to disturb original framing. Overall image is in quite remarkable condition, considering its age. There are no major visible flaws and no fading, which is important, only occasional foxing in the lower section.
The photograph measures 20 3/4"-inches high x 30 1/2"-inches wide (image only).
With the frame measures 29 1/2"-inches high x 39"-inches wide (framed).
It must have been quite an undertaking to take the photographs on such a large scale considering the huge camera and related equipment.
The gilt composition frame made by W. Tomlin of Birmingham is very decorative with winding ribbon and wine motif and in condition.
