About the Item
Rare Pierre Salinger Boldly Signed Photo With JFK Presented to Colonel Michael Paul. Pierre Salinger (1925-2004) served as Press Secretary to Presidents Kennedy and Johnson from 1961 to 1964, when he resigned to run for the U.S. Senate. He won the Democratic primary on June 2, 1964. After California Senator Clair Engle died on July 30, 1964, Salinger was appointed Senator on August 4, 1964, but lost the election that November to former actor George Murphy. Later Salinger was an ABC news correspondent and freelance journalist. He committed an embarrassing gaffe in November 1996, when he claimed to have found a document revealing that TWA Flight 800 had actually been shot down by a U.S. Navy missile test. The "document" turned out to be an internet hoax, after which the term "Pierre Salinger syndrome" was coined to describe the tendency to believe whatever one finds on the net.
From the estate of Colonel Paul. Paul Michael Iogolevitch - 1901/1980, later known as Colonel Michael Paul was a violinist who joined the Russian Army at age 15 and fought in World War I. He migrated to the United States where he became wealthy in the petroleum industry. He founded the C. Michael Paul Foundation. Before Kennedy was elected President, when ever he traveled to Palm Beach to visit his mother and father, he stayed at his father’s estate on Ocean Blvd. After the election, his father's house would not accommodate both the Kennedy family and all of the Presidential entourage. So to offset these logistical problems, the Presidential party usually stayed at the nearby estate of Colonel C. Michael Paul. Paul’s opulent estate had eight bedrooms, museum quality art on the walls, a panoramic floor-to-ceiling view of the ocean, a grand marble staircase, and a heated swimming pool. First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy was said to be very comfortable using the house. In addition, the house met her chief requirement of providing privacy with its' high hedges that completely surrounded the property. This allowed Caroline and John, Jr. to play in the outdoor fountain and swimming pool unseen and provided ample space for the machine-gun toting Secret Service officers to set-up and maintain a security perimeter.
Kennedy also had a meeting with Golda Meir at the estate in 1962.
Trent Antiques partially liquidated Colonel Paul's estate in the early 1980's, and sold many of the Kennedy related material.
Trent Antiques has been a respected name in antiques for over 35 years with a large collection of period furniture, art, books, jewelry and decorative accessories.
