"Surf Culture" Vintage "Big Wednesday" Movie Poster Signed by John Severson
By John Severson Productions
Located in San Diego, CA
A very nice "Surf Culture" vintage "Big Wednesday" movie poster signed by surf industry pioneer and "Surfer Magazine" founder John Severson circa 1990s. The piece is in great condition with vibrant colors and measures 12"W x 18"H; it is presented in a black metal frame and has a picture of Severson with the original owner at the signing on the back. Severson was the producer of this 1961 surfer cult classic. I believe this piece is a reprint and not an original poster from 1961. Nevertheless, it would make a "must have" addition to any surf memorabilia collector! #3179 John Severson, well known as the creator of the internationally acclaimed SURFER Magazine, grew up surfing off the beaches of Southern California. He began his career as a painter, selling his first works while finishing his Master’s Degree at Long Beach State College. In the ’50s he became the first person to create a large body of art relating to the Hawaii-California surf culture. Since then he has provided a steady output of oil paintings, watercolors, drawings, and prints. In 1958, John used his art, photography, and surfing passion to create a popular surf movie series. His films included SURF SAFARI, SURF FEVER, BIG WEDNESDAY, and PACIFIC VIBRATIONS. Severson's smash hits posters from the ’50s and ’60s, remain collector favorites. As a surfer, Severson was known for riding big waves, and for his innovative performance style in big surf. In 1961, he won the Peru International Surfing Championships and was a finalist in the U.S. and Hawaiian Championships. With the founding of SURFER, John’s art focused on the magazine and graphics. His painting “Surf Bebop” was selected as the outstanding cover painting of 1963 by Communication Arts. Surfer During the ’60s, he authored two surf books...

"Museo de Arte Prehispanico de Mexico" Oaxaca Poster Signed by Rufino Tomayo
By Rufino Tamayo
Located in San Diego, CA
Super rare "Museo de Arte Prehispanico de Mexico" Oaxaca poster signed by Rufino Tomayo, circa 1970s. The poster is in good vintage condition mounted on board (no rip tears, pin holes or creases) with with some fading and stains (please see pictures). It is signed in the lower center in marker by Tomayo. The piece measures 18" x 27.5" and is a very hard to find poster! #2346 Rufino Tamayo was born in the city of Oaxaca in 1899, but moved to Mexico City to live with an aunt after the death of his parents. Despite being an orphan and growing up in poverty he showed a great interest in the arts, and went on to study fine art at the Escuela Nacional de Artes Plasticas. Although Tamayo was a modernist artist he was fascinated by Mexico’s indigenous civilizations and their enduring presence in the country’s collective conscious, and he sought to portray this connection to the past in his artwork. Rather like his contemporary Diego Riviera...

Vintage Kid Creole Concert Poster 1985
Located in Brooklyn, NY
Vintage Kid Creole and the Coconuts 1985 concert poster: This rare Kid Creole and the Coconuts announcement/poster was published on the occasion of his December 26th, 1985 show at Carnegie Hall. This was the band's debut performance at Carnegie Hall, and it was written about in the New York Times: "THE POP LIFE; CARNEGIE HALL DEBUT FOR KID CREOLE" (December 25th, 1985). Medium: Offset printed concert poster. Dimensions: 11 x 17 inches. Good overall vintage condition. Unsigned from an edition of unknown. American latin pop band founded by August Darnell aka Thomas Browder in 1980 in New York City. Fronted by Kid Creole (2) backed by the trio of The Coconuts and also featuring Coati Mundi, they enjoyed most of their success in the eighties. Their debut album was critically well-received but not successful commercially. Their second album was a concept album matched with a New York Public Theater stage production; it received positive reviews, with Darnell recognized as a clever lyricist and astute composer, arranger and producer. Their international breakthrough came with their third album, 1982's Tropical Gangsters, which hit #3 in the UK and spun off three Top 10 hits with Stool Pigeon, Annie, I'm Not Your Daddy and I'm A Wonderful Thing, Baby ; Dear Addy also made the Top 40. In the US the album was retitled Wise Guy and reached #145, and I'm a Wonderful Thing, Baby flirted with the R&B charts. Dixit Darnell: "In the Savannah Band I’d modelled my style on 1930s/40s jazz singer and showman Cab Calloway, and I created Kid Creole as an extreme version of that, a sort of lounge lizard...
