Another fabulous design by Saul Bass features on the US 1 Sheet Style B poster for 50s The Big Country starring Gregory Peck, Jean Simmons, Carroll Baker, Charlton Heston and Burl Ives. One of the rarer Bass titles, especially in such good condition.
Saul Bass (1920-1996), the undisputed maestro of film title and poster design. With a career that spanned some 50 years, Bass’ enduring style continues to resonate as strongly today as it ever did.
Unsurprisingly the posters deigned by Bass are highly collectable and make for sound investments. At the top end, Vertigo, and, in our opinion the better-value-for-money, Anatomy of a Murder are highly coveted and have price tags to match. However there are many other still affordable Bass titles available.
This vintage movie poster was originally folded (as issued) but has been professionally linen-backed. It is sized 27 x 41 1/2 inches (plus a little with the linen-backing). It will be sent rolled (unframed).

Saul Bass was born in New York. Bass was a rotund, jovial character. After studying at the Art Students League and graduating from Brooklyn College, he moved west at the age of 26, and is credited with introducing an East Coast sensibility to marketing. He saw advertising as a means for funding his passion for the movies, and after 6 years working with a number of agencies, he finally had the funds to establish his own. All this time, he was forging ever-closer links with the film industry, and in 1954 this led to a commission from Otto Preminger to design the poster for Carmen Jones.
