Bruce Conner (1933 – 2008)
Conner has not only shown new ways of filmmaking, but repeatedly reinvented himself as an artist in his works in various media. Bruce Conner became known as an artist in the 1950s with his assemblage works from nylons, furniture parts, wrecked dolls, and other refuse from the affluent society. The non conformist regarded identity and authenticity as variables which he questioned critically and humorously. Whether he staged a political candidature, used his friend Dennis Hopper’s name as a pseudonym, or had himself declared dead in Who’s Who of America of 1973, he eschewed artistic, personal, or marketable categorizations throughout his life.
Bruce Conner died in San Francisco, the city where he had lived a large part of his life, in 2008.
Close to the Beat Generation and its freethinking redefinition of the American way of life, he has remained an insider’s tip despite his pioneering feats in many fields. He was called the “last magician of the twentieth century” on the occasion of the first retrospective of his films at the Harvard Film Archive shortly after his death.
Anna Halprin (born Anna Schuman on 13 July 1920) helped pioneer the experimental art form known as postmodern dance. Halprin, along with her contemporaries such as Trisha Brown, Simone Forti, Yvonne Rainer, John Cage, and Robert Morris, collaborated and built a community based around the fundamentals of post-modern dance. In 1950s, she established the San Francisco Dancers’ Workshop to give artists like her a safe haven to practice their art. Being able to freely explore the capabilities of her own body, she created a systematic way of moving using kinesthetic awareness
