Steve McQueen defines the words "tough cop" in this action-packed thriller about a police officer who sets out to track down an underworld bigshot who killed a witness under his protection. The famed car chase scene--in which McQueen did all his own driving--set a new standard for all such action sequences to come. If you've never seen the renowned car chase sequence through San Francisco down Taylor Street between McQueen's Ford Mustang and the killer's black Dodge Charger, you'll simply have no idea why the film received a much-deserved Oscar for Best Film Editing. Many consider Steve McQueen's turn as maverick, taciturn San Francisco cop Detective Bullitt his signature role.
