About the Item
History: A decade of chaos and political upheaval in China called the Cultural Revolution began in 1966 and lasted until 1976. It began with factional disputes over the future of Chinese socialism. Oblique criticisms of Chairman Mao in the early 1960s by pragmatic and bureaucratic modernizers inside the Chinese Community Party prompted him to retaliate against this threat to his ideology-led position. Unable to do so within the Communist Party, he utilized discontented students and young workers whome he called the Red Guards to attack local and central party officials, who were then replaced by his own supporters, often with army backing. The most senior official to fall was Liu Shaoqi, State Chairman of China since 1959 and Mao's heir-apparent. Liu Shaoqi lost all his government and party posts. Another, perhaps more famous official, Deng Xiaoping, also lost his position of authority. The Cultural Revolution came to an end with Mao's death in 1976. Afterward, Deng Xiaoping regained prominence and in 1978 he regained control of the Communist Party and commenced with his plan to economically reform China. It is Deng Xiaoping who is credited with laying the groundwork for China to become a modern economic power. This poster shows Liu Shaoqi and Deng Xiaoping being branded as "traitors" to Mao's Socialist doctrine.

Five posters from Chinese cultural revolution era circa 1970s. Four depicts scenes from modern revolutionary opera, two with music scores and lyrics. Two from "the Story of Red Lanten", one from "The Red Female Army" and one from "Sha Family Village". Some with publication date and origin. These are from a New England Collection purchased directly in Beijing in the 80s. They are in a simple black poster frame. These stylized posters served as a wide range of propaganda during the cultural revolution in China.
