Divine's Movie & Play Posters - Pink Flamingo Women Behind Bars The Neon Woman
About the Item
From the outrageous and fabulous well known drag queen and counterculture actor Divine (1945-1988), posters from Tom Eyen’s plays Women Behind Bars (+ 8 x 10 photo) and The Neon Woman and a poster from Divine’s cult movie Pink Flamingos by John Waters. The poster of The Neon Woman and the one of Pink Flamingos are dedicated and signed by Divine.
The poster for Women Behind Bars is for the 1976 revival of the play by Tom Eyen (Mary Hartmann, Mary Hartman, Dreamgirls) featuring Divine as the matron of a Women’s House of Detention in Greenwich Village. The theme of the play is a dark comedy, an exaggerated and absurd melodrama of incarcerated women experiencing over the top campy situations . Graphics by Michael Vollbrach.
Also there is a photograph from the play showing Divine exiting a cell.
Pink Flamingos is a movie from 1976 written and directed by John Waters. The plot is about a wanted criminal Baltimore figure played by Divine as Babs. Babs is hiding out in a run down trailer with her family of outcasts while trying to prevent a couple from stealing her title as “The Filthiest Person Alive”. At rhe end of the movie she proves that she deserves the title. Poster designed by Irving Freeman
The Neon Woman 1978 play, also by Tom Eyen, is an outrageous murder mystery set in a rundown Baltimore tacky strip joint by a retired stripper, Divine as Flash Storm. Rare poster.

Santiago Álvarez Román (1919-1998) was a Cuban filmmaker. Alvarez wrote and directed documentaries about Cuban and American culture. He became head of ICAIC newsreel division in the 60s and developed an unique format for his docu films.
Antonio Fernández Reboiro is a Cuban Postwar & Contemporary artist who was born in 1935. He studied medicine and architecture at the University of Havana. In 1963 he began to work at the ICAIC (Cuban Institute of Cinematographic Art and Industry) until 1982 designing posters.
Most of the highly collectible Cuban posters are from mid-1960s through early 1980s, the period called “el periodo de oro de la grafica cubana” (golden period of Cuban graphics). These silkscreens were develop with new graphic techniques, due in part that materials were not readily available and lack of formal graphic schools. The Cuban posters became known for the use of bold innovate images which were mostly for proganda. Among the most important were the movie posters of the ICAIC which would promote the national movie industry as well as foreign films.
