About the Item

Long harbouring a dream of becoming a movie star as well as a chart topping rock and roll idol, Elvis Presley made his acting debut as Clint Reno in this 1956 Western, starring as the young brother who stays home to take care of the family farm while his three older brothers fight for the Confederates in the American Civil War, later returning to find that Clint has married the former girlfriend of eldest brother Vance. Initially titled 'The Reno Brothers' and conceived as a Civil War drama without songs, four musical numbers including 'Love Me Tender' were shoehorned into the script after Elvis was cast in the picture. Following Presley's performance of the ballad on the Ed Sullivan Show, which prompted one million advanced sales of the single, Twentieth Century Fox retitled the film 'Love Me Tender'. Although most reviewers were somewhat critical of Presley's acting abilities, the film was so popular that it recouped its cost just two weeks after national release, and Elvis would go on to act in a further thirty feature films over the next thirteen years. Introducing a generation of cinema-goers to Elvis on screen, poster artist Tom William Chantrell packed a punch with his design for the original British quad, picturing a roaring halftone Elvis on a popping hot pink ground, punctuated with a pulsing acid yellow silhouette of Presley with his guitar. CONDITION Archivally backed on linen. Backing and spots of light colour touching have smoothed and diminished one horizontal and three vertical machine folds as issued. Colour touching to minor surface loss at crossfolds and an 11 in. crease from upper edge through 'L' in 'Presley'. Minor edge wear, with spots of restoration to small paper chips along 4 in. of upper edge. Image and colours otherwise excellent. The poster will be shipped rolled (unframed) in a heavy duty postal tube.

Elvis 'Girls! Girls! Girls!' Original Vintage Japanese B2 Movie Poster, 1963
Located in Devon, GB
Following the tried and tested golden formula of light-hearted musical entertainment, exotic location and girls galore which saw Elvis' soundtrack albums far outstrip his regular album sales, 'Girls! Girls! Girls!' stands out as one of Elvis Presley's more popular films, even receiving a Golden Globe nomination for Best Motion Picture - Musical. Elvis' eleventh feature film and his second shot in Hawaii, 'Girls! Girls! Girls!' was a safe money-spinner for both his record label RCA and the film's distributor Paramount, who saw Elvis voted as 1962's 'Top Box Office Draw' for having three of the top grossing films of that year. The highlight of the film is Presley's performance of his enduring pop classic 'Return to Sender,' which subsequently peaked at no.2 on the US Billboard chart when released as the lead single from the soundtrack album. Seen in sublime profile, Elvis is every inch the handsome heartthrob as the penniless fishing boat pilot on this ultra rare B2 poster for the original Japanese release. Completing one of the best poster designs we have seen for this picture, a bevy of bikini-clad beauties feature at the foot of the photomontage, with Elvis as the carefree sailor sandwiched between his two love interests, played by Stella Stevens...
