Poster of the Fraissinet and Cyprien Fabre Navigation Company created by Maurice Fiévet in 1950 to promote maritime tourism between France and the West African coast.
The Fraissinet navigation company was founded in January 1836 in Marseille by Marc Constantin Fraissinet. In 1964, the Fraissinet Company was bought by the Compagnie Maritime des Chargeurs Réunis, acquired at the same time as another Marseille company, the Société Générale des Transports Maritimes (SGTM).
Cyprien Fabre is a French shipowner from one of the richest merchant families in Marseille. In 1868, he created a trading and arms business in the form of a limited partnership named Cyprien Fabre & Cie.
In 1955, the Compagnie Générale de Navigation à Vapeur Cyprien Fabre & Cie turned to the Compagnie nationale de navigation of Jean Fraissinet to form the Compagnie de Navigation Fraissinet et Cyprien Fabre.
On the poster, we see the liner “Jean Mermoz” in the background, while in the foreground, locals sell fresh fish and fruit in the port. Dugout canoes are located at the foot of the liner.
The “Jean Mermoz”, a legendary liner from the 1960s, was launched on November 17, 1956 at the Dubigeon shipyard in Saint Nazaire. Built for the company Fraissinet and Ciprien Fabre. It bears the name of Jean MERMOZ, famous fighter pilot and friend of the founder of the company.
Maurice Fiévet, born in the United States in 1921, was a French adventurer and genre painter specializing in the ethnography of Africa and Cambodia.

Roger Chapelet, Original Vintage Boating Poster, Paris Boat Yacht Show, 1950
By Roger Chapelet
Located in SAINT-OUEN-SUR-SEINE, FR
Original Vintage boating poster for the Paris boat show dating from 1950 by Roger Chapelet.
Roger Chapelet - September 25th 1931 - June 30th 1995) was a French marine painter and poster artist.
Roger Chapelet’s career as a maritime painter began when he boarded the Rollon in 1927 and painted a series of paintings of different European ports: Le Havre, Antwerp, Rotterdam. Later he embarked on sailboats and painted the fishing campaigns off the banks of Newfoundland and Greenland.
In the 1930s, he became the poster artist for the main French maritime companies and in 1936 was appointed Peintre de la Marine (Official Painter to the Navy) and was a member of the Académie de Marine (see below).
The ocean liner companies included: Compagnie de Navigation Mixte, Paquet, Compagnie Générale Transatlantique, and Fraissinet.
Along with Marin-Marie and Albert Brenet, Roger Chapelet is considered one of the three great French marine painters of the 20th century. An exhibition was dedicated to him at the National Maritime Museum from October 8, 1993 to December 5, 1994.
Académie de Marine
The title of Official Painter to the Navy (POM) is granted by the French Minister of Defense to artists who have devoted their talent to the sea, to the National Navy and to seafarers. It can be awarded not only to painters but also to photographers, filmmakers, illustrators, engravers, and sculptors. The Academy of Marine Painters exists since 1830 and it’s members can put an anchor after their signature.
This poster is for the 16th International Nautical Show which was held Cours Albert 1er in between the Pont des Invalides and the Pont de l’Alma in Paris from the 30th September to 15 October 1950.
