Klein chose to highlight on this poster an elephant in shimmering colors, a sacred animal in India. Every year in the country, a festival takes place where elephants are painted and decorated to pay homage to this sacred animal.
David Klein was an American artist, best known for his influential work in advertising. Although he did illustrations for Broadway theater productions, Hollywood films, the U.S. military, and many corporate clients, Klein is best remembered for the iconic travel images he created for Howard Hughes and Trans World Airlines (TWA) in the 1950s and 1960s.
Trans World Airlines, TWA, is a former American airline, which was part of the Big Four (American Airlines, United Airlines and the defunct Eastern Air Lines).
The company was established on July 13, 1925. In October 1930, it merged with Transcontinental Air Transport to become Transcontinental and Western Air (T&WA). In 1950, the company changed its name to Trans World Airlines (TWA).
From the mid-1940s to the early 1970s, TWA was one of only two American airlines to fly to Europe (the other being Pan American World Airways).

David Klein
David Klein was an immensely prolific travel posterist who worked primarily for TWA and produced dozens of posters for the now-defunct global carrier. He designed several different series for TWA, ranging from early work that was realistic to later work that was cartoon-like in style. David Klein was born in El Paso, Texas in February of 1918. He moved to California where he attended the Art Center School [later renamed the Art Center College of Design] in Los Angeles. During the 1930s, he was an active member of the California Watercolor Society. This group of artists often chose to paint watercolors depicting scenes of everyday life in the cities and suburbs of California. They painted directly with little or no preliminary pencil drawings and used paper as a ‘color’ in a new and creative way.
