About the Item
Original antique political election propaganda poster issued by the Liberal Party - A Question Of Control - featuring an illustration of John Bull wearing a red jacket and top hat stopping the British statesman Henry Petty-Fitzmaurice 5th Marquess of Lansdowne (1845-1927) and the British Conservative statesman Arthur James Balfour (1848-1930; Prime Minister 1902-1905) walking a bulldog with the word Commons on its side representing the House of Commons on two leashes marked Lords Tory Majority with the text in quotes below - John Bull: Hullo, what are you doing with my dog? Lansdowne Balfour: Please Sir, we're taking care that he's always under control. John Bull: Oh, really! Then I'll thank you to leave him alone - I see I shall have to take away those chains. The dog's a good dog, he only does what I tell him, and I really will NOT have him "controlled" by a couple of dismissed Tory Ministers. (Lord Lansdowne has been talking of the "danger" of "an uncontrolled House of Commons" - House of Lords, February 12th, 1907.) A satirical character that was first used in 1712, John Bull is a personification of the British public. Printed and published by The Avenue Press Ltd, London. Horizontal. Good condition, folded, creasing, restored tears, tears.
