Roger Chapelet’s career as a maritime painter began when he boarded the Rollon in 1927 and painted a series of paintings of different European ports: Le Havre, Antwerp, Rotterdam. Later he embarked on sailboats and painted the fishing campaigns off the banks of Newfoundland and Greenland. The ocean liner companies included: Compagnie de Navigation Mixte, Paquet, Compagnie Générale Transatlantique, and Fraissinet. Along with Marin-Marie and Albert Brenet, Roger Chapelet is considered one of the three great French marine painters of the 20th century. The Academy of Marine Painters exists since 1830 and it’s members can put an anchor after their signature.
