The artist, Marcel Vertes (1895-1961), perfectly captured her I'm-world-weary-but-come-hither allure in this hypnotic image. He was an outstanding twentieth century painter, illustrator, and posterist who moved from his native Budapest, Hungary to Paris circa the Great War, where he lived and worked in the Latin Quarter, continuing in the footsteps of Forain and Toulouse-Lautrec. The artist was at his peak during the 1920’s. His eye focused on Paris street life, portrayals of women, and depictions of cabaret acts; he superbly captured the spirit of 1920’s Paris. Like other artists such as Jean Carlu, Vertes was forced by WWII to move to the U.S. In New York, he continued his fine work, concentrating on book illustration. His artworks feature quick, nervous strokes, and even in 1920’s Paris, his frankly erotic portrayals caused a sensation. Composed of sure and rapid lines, this remarkable poster is a magnificent study. Simone may be quietly smoldering, but she is also openly, vulnerably sexy. Vertes knew that muted sex and fine art are more than compatible; they are attention-getting.
