Superman 3 Original Polish Film Movie Poster, 1985, Waldemar Swierzy
About the Item
The Man of Steel looks fabulous on the Polish film poster for Superman 3. Swierzy's artwork is simply... well... superb.
The end of the Second World War marked the dawn of a new period in the development of Polish poster art, which became known as the Polish School of Posters. The recently installed Communist regime began commissioning artists to design posters not only with social and political messages, but also, and more prominently, to promote the many aspects of the government-run (Ministry of Art and Culture) cultural media: concerts, exhibitions, film, jazz, opera, theatre, etc. and the circus (cyrk in Polish). The artists were instructed to reject Western values in their posters and were to follow rules about appropriate messaging, but other than that, they had complete artistic freedom. This resulted in some truly unique and bold designs, chock-full with individual personality, wit and subversive commentary. Heavy in metaphors and symbolism and executed in a painterly fashion with handcrafted typography the posters of the Polish School of Posters significantly influenced the international development of graphic design. The highly original designs remain contemporary to this day and continue to gain appreciation.

American latin pop band founded by August Darnell aka Thomas Browder in 1980 in New York City. Fronted by Kid Creole (2) backed by the trio of The Coconuts and also featuring Coati Mundi, they enjoyed most of their success in the eighties. Their debut album was critically well-received but not successful commercially. Their second album was a concept album matched with a New York Public Theater stage production; it received positive reviews, with Darnell recognized as a clever lyricist and astute composer, arranger and producer. Their international breakthrough came with their third album, 1982's Tropical Gangsters, which hit #3 in the UK and spun off three Top 10 hits with Stool Pigeon, Annie, I'm Not Your Daddy and I'm A Wonderful Thing, Baby ; Dear Addy also made the Top 40. In the US the album was retitled Wise Guy and reached #145, and I'm a Wonderful Thing, Baby flirted with the R&B charts. Dixit Darnell: "In the Savannah Band I’d modelled my style on 1930s/40s jazz singer and showman Cab Calloway, and I created Kid Creole as an extreme version of that, a sort of lounge lizard...
