Antique Bird Print of the Grey Heron by Naumann, circa 1895

About the Item

Grey Heron by E. de Maes, Antique Bird Lithograph Ardea cinerea c.1895 This elegant antique ornithological print depicts the *Ardea cinerea*, commonly known as the Grey Heron (Fischreiher in German). The lithograph was created around 1900 and is based on the artwork of E. de Maes, a noted illustrator whose precise and naturalistic renderings enriched many European bird books of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The composition shows two Grey Herons in a tranquil riverside setting. One adult male heron is shown in the foreground, alert and stalking the water’s edge, while a younger bird stands poised on a rock in the background. Two additional herons are seen in flight above the reeds, providing a dynamic sense of movement and habitat context. The detail in the plumage is rendered with exceptional skill, showcasing the subtle gradations of grey, blue, and white that characterize this elegant wading bird. Printed using the chromolithographic process, the image is highly detailed and softly toned, capturing the refined aesthetics of natural history publishing at the turn of the 20th century. Chromolithography, a multi-layered color printing technique, allowed for rich and lasting colors that bring life to this scientific yet artistic depiction. This plate was likely part of a German-language ornithological series, as suggested by the notation “Fischreiher” and the standardized scientific naming convention “Ardea cinerea L.” at the bottom of the print. Such prints were often included in educational atlases or monographs on European bird species. Ideal for framing, this lithograph would complement interiors with a nature or vintage scientific theme. It is both a collectible artwork and a historical document of avian study in the early 20th century. Condition and framing tips: Good condition with minor age spotting in the margins. Frame with a light oak or natural wood frame and an ivory or pale green mat to highlight the delicate natural tones and enhance the timeless quality of this lithograph.
