About the Item

Antique print titled 'Steel Balsam'. This dentistry caricature shows a dentist extracting a tooth using steel pliers. The title of this version of this work is 'Steel Balsam' with balsam here being an archaic term for balm or treatment. The patient's toothache is being treated by the steel of the dentist's pliers. Before the development of anaesthetics, tooth extraction was extremely painful. Published after the original lithograph by Louis-Leopold Boilly.
