About the Item

Antique print titled 'Chine - Supplice du Tcha ou Kangue'. View of corporal punishment with a cangue (or tcha). The cangue is a device that was used for public humiliation and corporal punishment in East Asia and some other parts of Southeast Asia until the early years of the twentieth century. It was also occasionally used for or during torture. Because it restricted a person's movements, it was common for people wearing cangues to starve to death as they were unable to feed themselves. This print originates from 'Voyages autour du Monde et naufrages célèbres' by Gabriel Lafond de Lurcy. Artists and Engravers: Gabriel Lafond de Lurcy, French navigator, explorer and adventurer. Condition: Fair, general age-related toning and soiling. Some wear and small defects. Blank verso, please study image carefully. Date: 1844 Overall size: 24 x 16 cm. Image size: 16 x 12 cm. Antique prints have long been appreciated for both their aesthetic and investment value. They were the product of engraved, etched or lithographed plates. These plates were handmade out of wood or metal, which required an incredible level of skill, patience and craftsmanship. Whether you have a house with Victorian furniture or more contemporary decor an old engraving can enhance your living space. We offer a wide range of authentic antique prints for any budget.
