About the Item
Antique portrait titled 'George Lord Digby Earl of Bristol'. George Digby, 2nd Earl of Bristol, KG (bapt. 5 November 1612 – 20 March 1677) was an English politician who as Lord Digby (a courtesy title) sat in the House of Commons from 1640 until 1641, when he was raised to the House of Lords by a writ of acceleration. He supported the Royalist side in the English Civil War, but his ambition and instability of character caused serious problems to himself and both Kings he served.
This print originates from Thomas Birch's 'The Heads of Illustrious Persons of Great Britain'. The portraits featured in the series, which were engraved by Jacob Houbraken and George Vertue, were originally issued from 1737 onwards in portfolios of four portraits. Between 1743 and 1752, the series was published by John and Paul Knapton in London in the form of Birch's The Heads of Illustrious Persons of Great Britain, and contained biographies alongside the portraits. The number of plates included varied from edition to edition. Although the majority contained 108 plates, some editions contained as many as 120. Houbraken was responsible for producing a large proportion of the portraits, with Vertue only engraving around seven. The ornamental surroundings featured on the plates were engraved prior to the portraits, and were done so by Hubert-François Gravelot.

Jacobus Houbraken
Jacobus Houbraken was a Dutch engraver and the son of the artist and biographer Arnold Houbraken, whom he assisted in producing a published record of the lives of artists from the Dutch Golden Age. Houbraken was born in Dordrecht and learned the art of engraving from his father. In 1707 he moved to Amsterdam, where for years he helped his father with his magnum opus, his art historical work The Great Theatre of Dutch Painters (1718–21). When his father died, he assisted his mother with the last proofs of the manuscript before publishing. With this project, he started his portraits of Netherlandish celebrities, that are today in many cases the only likenesses left of these people. Houbraken was influenced by studying the works of Cornelis Cort, Jonas Suyderhoef, Gerard Edelinck and the Visschers. He died, aged 81, in Amsterdam.
