About the Item

Antique Print of Arctic Skate – Raia Gaimardi (Gaimard’s Ray) – Hand-Colored Lithograph, 1845 Description: This striking 19th-century hand-colored lithograph depicts La Raie de Gaimard (Raia gaimardi), commonly known as Gaimard’s Ray, a species of skate native to the cold northern waters around Iceland and Greenland. The illustration was produced as part of the scientific expedition Voyage en Islande et au Groenland, published in Paris in 1845, and showcases the precision and elegance of French natural history art from the mid-1800s. Presented in full dorsal view, the skate's flattened, kite-shaped body is shown with extraordinary anatomical detail. The fine stippling across the wings, the strong tapering of the tail, and the subtle gradations in brown and grey shading create a lifelike impression. Delicate linework captures the ridged texture of the skin, a key feature of these cartilaginous fish. Beneath the main illustration is a secondary drawing—an inset study of the ray’s mouth and jaw structure—highlighting the scientific focus of the expedition’s zoological team. These kinds of studies were essential for early taxonomic classification. The print was drawn by Oudart, engraved by H. Blanchard, and published by Arthus Bertrand. This is plate “Poissons Pl. 3” in the zoological section of the expedition’s monumental publication. Species in the genus 'Raia' (now often referred to as 'Raja') are bottom-dwelling marine animals found in northern oceans. The Gaimard Ray was likely named in honor of Joseph Paul Gaimard, a renowned French naval surgeon and naturalist who participated in several scientific voyages during the first half of the 19th century. Condition: Very good overall. Minor foxing mostly in the outer margins. A small water stain is present at the bottom center edge, not affecting the main image. Plate impression strong, and coloring remains clean and detailed. Framing tips: This symmetrical and centered composition looks exceptional in a wide ivory or sea-gray mat with a dark wood or black frame. It pairs well with marine charts or other zoological illustrations. Ideal for a library, study, or coastal home décor. UV-protective glazing is recommended to preserve the hand-applied pigments.
