Antique Print of the Atlantic Halibut (Pleuronectes hippoglossus) – Hand-Colored Lithograph, 1845 This striking hand-colored lithograph features Le Flétan (Pleuronectes hippoglossus), known in English as the Atlantic Halibut. It was published in 1845 in Paris as part of the French scientific series Voyage en Islande et au Groenland, a major 19th-century expedition that documented Arctic marine life with both scientific accuracy and artistic refinement. The Atlantic Halibut is shown in full lateral profile, oriented with its eyes on the right side, as typical of this large flatfish. The deep brown coloration is speckled with lighter, irregular markings that capture the fish’s natural camouflage on sandy and muddy seabeds. The detailing of the overlapping scales and the precision of the finely lined fins reflect the engraver’s skill and the expedition’s scientific purpose. This is plate “Poissons Pl. 26,” drawn by Louis Bévalet, engraved by H. Blanchard, and published by Arthus Bertrand. The halibut’s form is powerful and asymmetrical, its flattened body shape representing the evolutionary adaptation of benthic species in cold marine environments. The Atlantic Halibut is the largest of all flatfish species and one of the most economically important in the North Atlantic. In the 19th century, it was considered a rarity and a subject of scientific fascination due to its size, unique shape, and commercial value. The Voyage en Islande et au Groenland remains one of the most iconic natural history projects of the French Second Empire, known for its artistic and zoological contributions to marine biology. Condition: Good overall. Minor foxing along the upper and right margin and a faint abrasion in the central upper body area of the fish. Strong plate impression. Coloring is vivid and well-preserved. No tears or repairs. Framing tips: This print pairs well with dark walnut, black, or antique gold frames, especially when contrasted with a pale ivory or soft gray mat. An excellent piece for display in a coastal interior, a seafood restaurant, or a natural history collection. Use museum glass or UV-filtering acrylic to preserve the original color and condition.
