About the Item

Antique Print of Greenland Shark with Anatomical Details – Paris, 1845 This rare hand-colored lithograph features a detailed scientific illustration of Somniosus borealis (now more commonly known as Somniosus microcephalus), the Greenland Shark. The plate originates from the French expedition Voyage en Islande et au Groenland, and was published in Paris by Arthus Bertrand in 1845. The Greenland Shark is shown in profile at the bottom of the plate, with its characteristically thick body, blunt snout, and slow-swimming posture. Native to Arctic and subarctic waters, this elusive species is known for its incredible longevity—some individuals are estimated to live over 400 years—making it one of the longest-living vertebrates on Earth. Above the main figure are precise anatomical studies including: * Diagrams of the upper and lower teeth, * A dorsal view of the skull and jaw structure, * A patch of dermal denticles (skin texture). These insets reflect the plate’s dual function as both an artistic composition and a zoological study tool. The clean engraving lines and subtle hand-coloring contribute to the timeless elegance of early scientific illustration. This plate is labeled "Poissons Pl. 1" and was drawn by Oudart, one of the most respected natural history illustrators of the 19th century. It was engraved with fine detail and published as part of France’s effort to document northern fauna during polar and Atlantic expeditions. The Voyage en Islande et au Groenland was a government-sponsored natural history mission to the North Atlantic, contributing significantly to the biological and geological knowledge of the time. Its published plates remain among the finest in marine zoology from the period. Condition: Good condition overall. Some faint foxing, mostly in the outer margins. Plate mark strong. Slight creasing in the lower left margin. Image and colors well preserved. Framing tips: A minimal frame in black or deep walnut with a wide cream or soft gray mat will enhance the clarity and tone of the print. Museum glass is recommended to preserve the fine details. Perfect for a scientific collection, polar exploration display, or natural history-themed interior.
