About the Item

Antique Print of the Tope Shark (*Galeus canis major*) – French Arctic Voyage, 1845 This rare and beautifully hand-colored lithograph features Le Milandre (Galeus canis major), now commonly identified with the tope shark (Galeorhinus galeus), a species of houndshark found in temperate and subarctic waters. The illustration was produced for the scientific publication Voyage en Islande et au Groenland, issued in Paris by Arthus Bertrand in 1845. The tope shark is depicted in exquisite detail, highlighting its streamlined body, pointed snout, and characteristic crescent-shaped caudal fin. Subtle color gradients in the shading—from soft greys to cream and warm brown tones—give this print a lifelike quality that is typical of the high craftsmanship of 19th-century French natural history illustration. Inset diagrams to the left show: * A ventral view of the head and mouth, * Close-up studies of the species' triangular serrated teeth. These supplementary views enhance the scientific value of the plate, intended to aid zoological identification and comparative anatomy. This is plate “Poissons Pl. 21” from the *Voyage en Islande et au Groenland*, a significant French expedition aimed at documenting the flora, fauna, and natural phenomena of the North Atlantic. The lithograph was drawn by Louis Bévalet and engraved by H. Blanchard—both respected contributors to the natural sciences and illustration in France. The tope shark itself is known for its migratory habits and relatively slender body. Unlike many other sharks, it has no dorsal spines and is considered harmless to humans. In the 19th century, such species were often poorly known, making illustrations like this one critical to early marine taxonomy. Condition: Very good condition. Minor scattered foxing in the margins and slight age-related toning. Plate mark present. No visible tears or restoration. Framing tips: This elegant shark print looks striking in a dark wood or matte black frame with a neutral cream or pale gray mat. The composition balances aesthetic appeal and scientific curiosity, ideal for a marine-themed study, office, or natural history collection. UV-protective glazing is recommended.
