About the Item

European Green Woodpecker – Picus Viridis – Hand-Coloured Engraving with Text, 1770–1829 A detailed hand-coloured engraving of the European green woodpecker (Picus viridis), shown in its natural environment with an accompanying egg illustration. This print originates from the monumental ornithological work ‘Nederlandsche Vogelen’ (Amsterdam, 1770–1829) by Cornelius Nozeman, Martinus Houttuyn and J.C. Sepp. It remains the first and most important study of Dutch birdlife, notable for its life-like depiction of species at or near actual size and in their typical habitat. The illustration captures two green woodpeckers clinging to the bark of a weathered tree trunk. The birds are distinguished by their vivid green plumage, bright yellow underparts, and striking red crowns. Subtle details, such as the different moustachial markings that distinguish males from females, are faithfully rendered. The European green woodpecker is known for its ground-foraging behaviour, feeding largely on ants rather than the tree-drumming habits of other woodpecker species. Accompanying the engraving are two full pages of original Dutch descriptive text from ‘Nederlandsche Vogelen’, which provide period-specific observations on the species’ habits, distribution, physical characteristics, and its status in the Netherlands during the late 18th and early 19th centuries. The text notes the bird’s association with the Roman god Mars, its nesting in decayed trees, and its distinctive calls. Condition: Very good, with general age-related toning and occasional faint handling marks. Original hand colouring remains vibrant and slight waviness to sheet. Text pages are well-preserved with clean print and minor toning to edges. Framing tips: This piece would present beautifully in a deep archival mount with a warm cream mat to complement the naturalistic tones, paired with a dark wood or olive-toned frame to enhance the greens of the bird. Consider displaying the text pages in a separate frame for an attractive companion display.
