About the Item

Hen – Gallus Domesticus Foemina – Antique Poultry Print, c.1829 A finely hand-coloured engraving of the domestic hen (Gallus gallus domesticus), titled in the original Latin as Gallus Domesticus Foemina. This elegant yet practical depiction shows the female bird standing alert on a small grassy mound, with her subtle brown and grey plumage accented by a bright red comb and wattles. The artist captures the rounded form, fine feather detailing, and steady stance of the hen, reflecting both her beauty and her importance in human society as a source of food and companionship. This plate comes from Nederlandsche Vogelen; volgens hunne huisdouding, aert, en eigenschappen beschreeven, published in Amsterdam between 1770 and 1829 by Cornelius Nozeman, Martinus Houttuyn, and Jan Christiaan Sepp. The series, the first major ornithological work in the Netherlands, is celebrated for its scientifically accurate depictions and meticulous artistry. Each bird is shown as it would appear in life, often close to actual size, making these works invaluable both as historical documents and as decorative art. Domestic chickens are a subspecies of the red junglefowl (Gallus gallus) native to Southeast Asia, but they have been bred worldwide for thousands of years, becoming the most numerous bird species on the planet. In the 18th and early 19th centuries, documenting such familiar species was as important to natural history as recording exotic wildlife, as it provided a complete record of avian life known to the Dutch naturalists of the time. Collectors and interior decorators alike value Nederlandsche Vogelen engravings for their charm, craftsmanship, and historical importance. This depiction of the hen is particularly appealing for farmhouse, country kitchen, or rustic-themed displays, as well as for collectors of antique poultry illustrations. Condition: Very good. Clean, strong paper with rich original hand colouring. Minimal toning, faint handling marks and some foxing in the upper in the margins. Plate mark clearly visible. Framing tips: Works beautifully with a warm cream or natural linen mount. A rustic oak or walnut frame will emphasise its rural charm, while a simple black frame offers a more contemporary contrast.
