About the Item

Indian Textile and Decorative Motifs – Floral & Paisley Patterns, Pl. XIX This brilliantly colored 19th-century decorative plate titled “INDIEN” (Indian), Plate XIX, presents a sumptuous array of traditional Indian ornamentation. Lithographed by Florion and printed by Firmin-Didot Frères, Fils & Cie in Paris, this chromolithograph captures the vibrancy and complexity of Indian textile and architectural design. Likely produced for a major design compendium such as Auguste Racinet’s *L'Ornement Polychrome*, this plate served as both an artistic reference and an homage to the rich aesthetic traditions of India. The design is composed of numerous fragments and panels that showcase motifs drawn from embroidered textiles, carved woodwork, architectural painting, and printed fabrics. Dominating the composition are two large paisley or boteh forms—ornamental teardrop-shaped designs of Persian origin that became emblematic of Indian shawls, particularly those from Kashmir. These are filled with delicate floral sprays, winding stems, and stylized leaves in brilliant reds, greens, blues, and golds set against cream and terracotta backgrounds. Floral and foliate patterns recur throughout the layout, often intertwined with arabesques, scrolls, and geometric flourishes. Each element is densely packed yet meticulously organized, a hallmark of Indian design from the Mughal and post-Mughal periods. Many of these motifs would have originated in textile traditions such as brocade weaving, block printing, or embroidered muslin (chikan), as well as the decoration of palace walls, niches, and temple ceilings. The plate includes subtle gold accents and rich color harmonies that replicate the vibrant palette found in Indian craftsmanship. Borders, friezes, medallions, and repeating patterns are arranged to offer a study of stylistic variety, highlighting the Indian mastery of ornament as both spiritual expression and artistic discipline. This print is a treasure for anyone interested in South Asian art, textile history, or historical design. It reflects the Orientalist fascination with India in 19th-century Europe and preserves authentic examples of indigenous decorative vocabulary. Condition report: Excellent condition overall. Bright original colors with light natural age toning in the margins. No damage, tears, or stains. A sharp and visually striking impression. Framing tips: This piece would be beautifully enhanced by a gold or deep mahogany frame. A double mat with warm cream and deep red or green accents would emphasize the intricate detailing and bold palette. Ideal for display in textile studios, eclectic interiors, or world art collections.
