About the Item

Antique Botanical Print – Orchid Odontoglossum Hybridum Leroyanum, c.1888 A striking and rare botanical print of Odontoglossum (Hybridum) Leroyanum, featuring a vibrant red and white orchid hybrid, from the monumental 19th-century work Reichenbachia: Orchids Illustrated and Described (1888–1894). This hand-colored lithograph captures the exotic charm of a hybrid Odontoglossum, a genus celebrated for its floriferous displays and bold color patterns. The orchid is illustrated in full bloom with an arched inflorescence bearing a long succession of richly marked flowers. Each blossom is composed of deep crimson-red petals with ivory margins and intricate spotting, radiating from a golden-yellow and maroon central lip. The flowers are arranged along a slender, arching stem that extends horizontally across the composition, balancing the upright cluster of green pseudobulbs and graceful foliage at the right. Signed by botanical artist Henry Moon (1857–1905) in the lower left, this image is one of the many plates he contributed to *Reichenbachia*, commissioned by the famed orchid collector and nurseryman Henry Frederick Conrad Sander. Lithographed by Joseph Mansell of London, this print exemplifies the high level of technical and artistic excellence that defined the *Reichenbachia* series—considered the finest orchid publication of the Victorian era. The hybrid nature of *Odontoglossum Leroyanum* reflects the period’s fascination with orchid breeding, which was reaching new heights during the late 19th century. This image not only conveys the botanical qualities of the orchid but also its decorative potential, making it an excellent choice for collectors, connoisseurs, and those with a passion for rare and vibrant botanical art. Condition report: Very good condition. Light age toning near the edges; a few faint margin spots. Image area clean, colors vivid. No tears or repairs. Blank verso.
