About the Item

Mount Tabor – Antique Aquatint View of Galilee by F.B. Spilsbury, 1803 This beautifully hand-colored aquatint titled Mount Tabor presents a sweeping view of the famous biblical mountain located in Lower Galilee, Israel. Mount Tabor rises strikingly from the plain at the eastern end of the Jezreel Valley, and in Christian tradition is associated with the Transfiguration of Jesus, making it a site of spiritual and historical significance. The composition, drawn “on the spot” by F.B. Spilsbury, shows a lively encampment scene in the foreground: travelers and merchants with camels, tents, and carts animate the landscape with daily activity. In the background, the distinct dome-like silhouette of Mount Tabor is bathed in warm light beneath a vast sky, emphasizing its iconic presence in the Holy Land. This print was engraved and published in London in 1803, part of Spilsbury’s illustrated record of his journey through the Mediterranean and the Levant. A British naval surgeon, Spilsbury had an eye for topographical detail and ethnographic interest, and his aquatints are admired both for their documentary value and romanticized artistry. Condition report: Very good condition with vibrant original hand-coloring. Margins clean with some minor age-related toning, few spots across the paper and one small worm hole in the middle. Paper strong and well-preserved with a wide border. Framing tips: Consider a frame in walnut, cherry, or olive wood with a light beige or warm cream-colored mount to complement the earthy tones and sky. Ideal for display alongside other early 19th-century Holy Land views.
