About the Item

Northern Lapwing Print – Tringa Vanellus Vulgaris by Nozeman and Sepp, 1770 This original hand-coloured copperplate engraving shows a pair of northern lapwings (Vanellus vanellus), or kieviten in Dutch, tending to a clutch of speckled eggs nestled among grasses. One bird stands upright, showing the iridescent green-black plumage and distinctive crest, while the other bends protectively over the nest. This composition beautifully captures not only the anatomy but also the natural behaviour and habitat of the species. Lapwings are common across temperate Eurasia and are particularly associated with Dutch wetlands and pastures. Their unmistakable flight, loud “peewit” calls, and dramatic aerial displays have long made them a familiar and beloved sight in the Netherlands and beyond. This plate comes from the monumental Nederlandsche Vogelen (1770–1829), the first illustrated ornithological work to cover all bird species found in the Netherlands. The project was begun by Cornelis Nozeman and carried forward by Martinus Houttuyn and the Sepp family, with exquisite illustrations engraved and coloured by hand under the direction of Jan Christiaan Sepp. The prints are admired for their blend of artistic detail and scientific observation, and are said to be close to life-size. Often accompanied by extensive descriptive text. This text page notes the Dutch name "kievit". Condition: Very good. Crisp impression with strong original colours. Minor toning, faint margin spotting, and small edge folds not affecting the image. Text page shows light toning, two tiny holes, and scattered margin spots. Framing tips: Use a warm white or soft beige mount and a dark green or walnut wood frame to accentuate the tones in the plumage. A gold fillet can add a refined touch. UV-protective glass is recommended to preserve the original colouring.

18th Century Catesby Hand-colored Bird & Plant Engraving "The Crested Titmous"
By Mark Catesby
Located in Alamo, CA
A hand-colored copperplate engraving of a bird and plants by Mark Catesby (1683-1749) entitled "The Crested Titmous" from "The Natural History of Carolina, Georgia, Florida and the Bahama Islands", published in 1731. It depicts a small Crested Titmous bird, facing left, perched on the stem of a plant with clusters of mauve colored star-like flowers. This original Catesby hand-colored engraving, on laid paper with a large central Fleur-de-Lys watermark, is presented in a cream color French mat. The mat measures 20" x 15.5" and the sheet measures 18.75" x 14.75". Mark Catesby was born in England to a prosperous family, but he traveled to America, first to visit his sister and her husband in 1712. From 1712 to 1719 he explored America observing its birds and plants, taking notes, creating drawings and collecting specimens. He returned to England with this material and created more detailed drawings. His next visit to America 1722-1726 allowed for more detailed research. Upon his return to England he created his monumental and beautiful work "The Natural History of Carolina, Florida, and Bahama Islands", which was published in London in two folio volumes of 11 parts each consisting of 20 plates...
