Old print of the cruelty of the Spaniards in Antwerp, 1576. It was the time of the Sack of Antwerp, often known as the Spanish Fury at Antwerp, an episode of the Eighty Years' War. It is the greatest massacre in Belgian history. This print orginates from 'Geschiedenissen der Vereenigde Nederlanden (..)' by Jean le Clerc.
Artists and Engravers: Jean Le Clerc / Joannes Clericus (1657-1736). From Hugenot origin, he studied filosophy, hebrew and theology in Geneva and travelled in Europe. He objected the calvinistic orthodoxie and influenced by Grotius, Episcopius, Van Limborch and others, he moved to Amsterdam, where he became a Remonstrant. He became a professor at the Remonstrant seminary, a writer and publisher.

This attractive map is presented in a cream-colored mat measuring 30" wide x 27.5" high. There is a central fold, as issued. There is minimal spotting in the upper margin and a tiny spot in the right lower margin, which are under the mat. The map is otherwise in excellent condition.
