About the Item
Rare Dutch Bird Print – Hoopoe, Bullfinch, Linnet and Quail, ca. 1770–1829
Antique hand-coloured print from Nederlandsche Vogelen, the monumental ornithological work published in Amsterdam between 1770 and 1829. This rare plate served as the decorative title page for Volume IV of the series and presents a lively arrangement of native European birds in a natural setting. It exemplifies the artistic and scientific collaboration of Cornelius Nozeman, Martinus Houttuyn, and Jan Christiaan Sepp, who together produced the first comprehensive ornithological study of the Netherlands.
The composition is rich in detail and colour. At the left, perched on a tree trunk, stands the striking hoopoe (Upupa epops) with its distinctive orange crest. To the right, a bullfinch (Pyrrhula pyrrhula) rests on a branch, its red breast and slate-blue wings carefully rendered. Above, a linnet (Linaria cannabina) is shown mid-flight while a Eurasian siskin (Spinus spinus) perches delicately on a twig. At the bottom, a common quail (Coturnix coturnix) is placed near a nest containing eggs, grounding the scene in a sense of natural life and continuity. The print highlights not only the beauty of the individual birds but also their coexistence within the Dutch landscape, reflecting the Enlightenment-era fascination with documenting nature in both an aesthetic and scientific manner.
Each species is hand-coloured with precision, giving the plate vibrancy and depth that has lasted for centuries. This title page is particularly significant because it presents a composite arrangement rather than a single species, offering an overview of avian diversity and serving as a visual prelude to the detailed plates contained within the volume. Collectors of ornithology and Dutch natural history value such pieces highly, as *Nederlandsche Vogelen* remains one of the cornerstones of European bird illustration.
Condition: Very good impression with original hand-colour. Slight toning to the margins consistent with age, minimal handling marks, and faint plate mark visible around the image. Paper is strong and well-preserved with wide margins.
Framing tips: A natural wood or walnut frame with a cream or light beige archival mat will enhance the soft yet vivid colours of the birds. Alternatively, a dark green or charcoal mat can be used to bring out the deep tones in the foliage and contrast with the warm plumage of the hoopoe and bullfinch. The plate works beautifully as a standalone decorative piece but also pairs well with other ornithological prints from the same series.
