About the Item

Redwing Thrush – Antique Bird Print by Nozeman and Sepp, 1770 This antique hand-coloured engraving depicts the redwing (Turdus iliacus), a small migratory thrush from the family Turdidae. Slightly smaller than the familiar song thrush, the redwing is easily recognised by the striking red flanks and underwing, which contrast with its speckled breast and pale eye-stripe. The plate shows two birds perched on branches, one in a dynamic pose with wings raised, allowing the observer to appreciate the subtle feather patterns and the warm hues of its plumage. The redwing breeds across northern Europe and Asia, nesting in forests, scrub, and birch woods, and is a common winter visitor further south, where it forages in flocks in fields, orchards, and hedgerows. Its high-pitched “tseep” call is often the first sign of migrating flocks passing overhead at night. For centuries, this species has been admired for its beauty and has figured prominently in European natural history studies. This print originates from Nederlandsche Vogelen; volgens hunne huishouding, aert en eigenschappen beschreeven (Amsterdam, 1770–1829), the landmark first study of Dutch ornithology. Initiated by Cornelis Nozeman and completed after his death by Martinus Houttuyn and the Sepp family, this monumental series was the first to document all known bird species of the Netherlands. Each plate was engraved and hand-coloured with remarkable precision, often showing birds in natural postures or alongside elements of their habitat. Collectors and naturalists value Nederlandsche Vogelen prints both for their ornithological importance and their artistic quality. The hand-colouring on this plate enhances the delicate red hues of the underparts, highlighting the natural beauty of this migratory thrush. Condition: Very good. Minor age-related toning, wide margins preserved and some foxing spots in the margins. Strong impression with clear plate mark. Accompanied by the original descriptive text sheet. Framing tips: A soft ivory or pale grey mount will enhance the red plumage, while a dark walnut or ebonised frame will give the piece depth and contrast. A gilt frame with a narrow liner could be used to accentuate its classical elegance.
