About the Item

Spotted Nutcracker – Antique Bird Engraving by Nozeman and Sepp, 1770 This antique hand-coloured engraving, titled Caryocatactes, depicts the Spotted Nutcracker (Nucifraga caryocatactes), a striking member of the crow family distinguished by its chocolate-brown plumage covered with fine white spotting. The bird is shown perched gracefully on a branch, with careful attention to its powerful bill and characteristic markings. The detailed hand-colouring highlights the glossy black wings and tail, subtly tinted with a greenish-blue sheen, contrasting beautifully with the speckled body. The Spotted Nutcracker, known in Dutch as notenkraker, is a woodland bird of the Palearctic region, found across Europe and Asia, particularly in coniferous forests. It is closely associated with pine forests, where it plays a vital ecological role in dispersing seeds, particularly of hazelnuts and pine species. This feeding and caching behaviour contributes significantly to forest regeneration, a fact already observed by naturalists in the 18th century. This print originates from Nederlandsche Vogelen; volgens hunne huishouding, aert en eigenschappen beschreeven (Amsterdam, 1770–1829), the monumental Dutch ornithological series authored by Cornelis Nozeman and Martinus Houttuyn, with illustrations by the Sepp family. It remains the first comprehensive ornithological work of the Netherlands and is celebrated for its life-like, often near life-size depictions of birds in natural settings. Collectors particularly value this plate for its strong visual impact, with the speckled patterning of the plumage finely captured, reflecting both scientific precision and artistic elegance. Its rarity, combined with the quality of execution, makes it a desirable piece for natural history collections. Condition: Very good. Light age-related toning and some spotting consistent with the age of the paper, margins wide and intact. Plate mark visible. Accompanied by the original descriptive text sheet. Framing tips: This engraving would be enhanced in a dark wood or walnut frame, paired with a cream or soft beige mount to complement the warm brown tones of the plumage. A narrow gilt inner border would add refinement and highlight the bird’s glossy wing details.
