About the Item

Stock Dove – Columba oenas – Kleine Bosch-Duif, Netherlands, 1829 This antique hand-coloured engraving depicts the Stock Dove (Columba oenas), a graceful pigeon native to Europe and parts of western Asia. The bird is shown perched on a branch, highlighting its soft bluish-grey plumage, pinkish breast, and iridescent green and violet neck sheen. The artist has carefully rendered the subtle gradations of colour, from the darker tail feathers to the delicate patterning on the wings, giving the image a lifelike quality. Its calm stance and naturalistic setting reflect the scientific yet artistic approach of the work from which it originates. This plate comes from Nederlandsche Vogelen; volgens hunne huishouding, aert, en eigenschappen beschreeven, published in Amsterdam between 1770 and 1829 by Cornelius Nozeman, Martinus Houttuyn, and Jan Christiaan Sepp. As the first comprehensive ornithological study of the Netherlands, the series was groundbreaking for its combination of meticulous scientific observation and rich artistic detail. The Stock Dove, smaller than the common Wood Pigeon, was described in detail in this work, with attention to its size, plumage variations, habitat, and seasonal behaviour. The accompanying original Dutch text pages provide rich historical and scientific observations on the species, its behaviour, nesting habits, and physical characteristics, as understood in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Condition report: Very good condition. The engraving retains strong, fresh colours with only minimal age-toning to the margins. No visible tears, folds, or repairs. The accompanying text pages are clean, with light handling marks and occasional faint spots typical of the period. Framing tips: A pale cream or light grey mount will enhance the soft colour palette of the plumage, while a classic dark wood or walnut frame will lend depth and warmth. For a more contemporary look, a thin black frame with archival glass will preserve its vibrancy and protect the delicate hand colouring.
