About the Item

Very Decorative Early 19th-century French Provincial Plate Rack. Made of richly patinated chestnut with small decorative turned apple wood spindles and brass nail decorations. Typical design of Breton Domestic Furniture and made circa 1840. A superb example of early 19th-century French Provincial craftsmanship, this Breton plate rack was made in France circa 1840. Constructed from richly patinated chestnut, the piece is detailed with rows of finely turned apple wood spindles, each capped with decorative brass nailheads. The five open tiers are framed by scalloped moldings and punctuated with carved floral medallions, showcasing the regional motifs typical of domestic furniture from Brittany. The design reflects a harmonious blend of functionality and ornamental charm- each tier offering generous storage while the baluster-form spindles and architectural arches lend rhythmic visual interest. The chestnut wood's deep natural tone is beautifully offset by the warmer contrast of the apple wood, creating a balance and richly textured surface. A compelling and authentic addition to a country kitchen, dining room, or as a statement display piece, this plate rack exemplifies the enduring appeal of French rural design. In excellent condition with age-appropriate wear and a beautifully aged surface patina.
