About the Item

18th 18th Century Allegories of the seasons with putti Copper, 60 x 40 cm Framed, 76 x 56 cm The 18th-century slab described here is divided into four scenes with horizontal development. These small friezes feature putti intent on the most typical jobs and tasks of each of the four seasons that make up the year. Their innocence and playfulness arouse a certain sympathy for them; whether harvesting crops or hunting them in a snowy landscape, these tiny but hard-working infants manage to capture the attention and affection of spectators. Although lightly, they carry out their activities in a meticulous manner and fans fully grasp the sense of daily work that unites and at the same time differentiates the four seasons: grafting and watering flowering plants in spring, harvesting in summer, harvesting in autumn and hunting in winter. Classic symbols of these periods are reserved for each skit: from bunches of grapes to flowers via snow and wheat harvested in bundles. The engraving is shallow and allows us to admire the faint contour lines, barely sketched as if they were simple pencil or charcoal sketches; this lightness of touch and form corresponds well with the carefree industriousness depicted. The use of this matrix to imprint the printed design makes it a unique tool from which multiple paper reproductions have been made, thus giving it a special value over the copies made. The ancient charm of this plate, the peculiarity of its use, and the unusual, at least in terms of painting, material on which the images are depicted make this item a rare and original collector's item. The immortality of the theme related to the cycle of the seasons, used since ancient times and which has come down to us, is revived here with a less solemn but still coherent and deliberately relaxed and playful tone.
