19th Century Black Forest Carved Wall Cross with Gilded INRI Plaque

About the Item

Monumental 19th Century Black Forest Carved Wall Cross with Gilded INRI Plaque An exceptional and rare large-scale 19th-century Black Forest cross, intricately hand-carved in hardwood and richly detailed throughout with symbolic religious motifs. Originating from the Alpine region—likely southern Germany or Switzerland—this commanding devotional piece reflects the finest traditions of ecclesiastical Black Forest carving. The cross is elaborately adorned with deeply carved grapevine motifs—clusters of grapes and curling vine leaves—symbolic of the Eucharist and Christian resurrection. Each arm terminates in a Gothic quatrefoil panel, framed with radiating carved foliage. At the intersection, a quatrefoil boss anchors the composition, surmounted by a giltwood “INRI” plaque—traditionally representing the Latin inscription Iesus Nazarenus Rex Iudaeorum (Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews). A truly dramatic decorative statement, this cross would have originally hung in a chapel, monastery, or private oratory. It remains an evocative piece of religious art, remarkable in both scale and craftsmanship. Dimensions: Height: 180 cm (70.9 in) Width: 118 cm (46.5 in) Depth: 3 cm (1.2 in) Condition: In good antique condition. Structurally sound with minor expected wear and a few small historic repairs consistent with age and use. The carved detail remains sharp and well defined, and the original surface retains a deep, rich patina. Provenance: Private collection, Continental Europe. This imposing carved cross would suit a range of interior contexts—from traditional to ecclesiastical to maximalist—and is offered ready to hang.
