About the Item

This oven tile was handcrafted at the beginning of the 20th century out of burnt clay. It was handpainted underglaze in blue and white. The tile is inscribed Jupiter. Jupiter was the heighest god in Roman religion and had many epithets, one of them is Jupiter Fulgur (Jupiter Lightning). The cult of Jupiter Fulgur worshipped the places where lightning touched the ground. On the tile Jupiter is depicted with the attributes of Jupiter Fulgur. The god is standing on an eagle, he is wearing a crown and holding flashes in both hands. The edge of the tile is framed by a twisted rope in relief, on the top and the bottom we see two lines of rope.
