About the Item

Ceramic artwork by Antoni Cumella, 1979. Hand-signed. In good condition, with minor wear consistent with age and use, preserving a beautiful patina. He was born in Granollers (Spain) on 1913. His father, who was a jeweler, died when he was three years old. When he was seven years old his mother married Josep Regàs, a potter, who taught him this art. With 15 years old he participates in his first collective exhibition. The Universal Exhibition of Barcelona in 1929, allows him to know the international work presented, like the pavilion of the German architect Mies van der Rohe and the works of Manolo Hugué. In 1935, he was a professor of ceramics in a ceramic school in Barcelona. At that time he meets Pau Casals, Manolo Hugué, Miquel Llor and Josep Llorens i Artigas with whom he will maintain a great friendship. During the civil war he served as a health worker, being imprisoned until 1940, and was unable to recover his passport until 1952. In 1936, he participated in the VI Milan Triennial where he obtained the Gold Medal, obtaining it again in 1951 and 1957. In 1959 together with Alexandre Cirici and Romà Vallès, in a pioneering initiative in Spain, they founded the School of Art of the FAD (Promotion of Decorative Arts).
