About the Item

Extraordinary in size and subject matter, this monumental bronze relief sculpture, dating from 1925, depicts four nude athletes receiving the victory laurel from a seated Benjamin Franklin, founder of the University of Pennsylvania. Franklin is shown in 18th century garb, while the young men are shown without any clothing at all, a conceit that had to draw a smile from athletes and students alike. The panel was sculpted by Robert Tait McKenzie, the world's leading sculptor of young athletes, and was made to mark the University of Pennsylvania's Relay Carnival, now known as the Penn Relays, a prestigious track and field event for high school athletes across America. Robert Tait McKenzie modeled the athletes in 1925 after four celebrated University runners, three of whom were also Olympic champions. The relief was cast in several sizes -- a small size that served as a medal for individuals winners, a larger size for schools that excelled overall, and this monumental rondel, which is the first we have seen. McKenzie was a remarkable polymath, acting as physician, physical therapist, physical educator, and sculptor over his lifetime, and serving as the University of Pennsylvania’s first Professor of Physical Education from 1904 to 1929. In 1931 he was appointed the J. William White Research Professor of Physical Education, permitting him to focus his efforts almost exclusively on sculpture, and in most cases, he used university students as his models. The relief is bronze, which has been given a gold finish; it retains its original beveled hardwood base.

"Algernon Sullivan Plaque, " Rare Bas Relief with Nude Figures by Jules Roine
By Jules-Edouard Roiné 1
Located in Philadelphia, PA
This rare and important relief sculpture honors Algernon Sydney Sullivan, one of the most admired and respected attorneys and civic leaders active in New York in the late 19th century. Born a Hoosier, he moved to New York by 1860, and though an ardent abolitionist, felt honor-bound to step forward to defend the sailors of the Confederate ship Savannah, captured by the Union early in the Civil War. He served in the public sector for a decade and fought the Tweed gang. Later, Sullivan created two of the more important and influential law firms in New York in his era -- one of them, Sullivan and Cromwell, continues today -- but he always remained supportive of the poor who could not afford to retain an attorney for legal assistance. In his honor, the Sullivan Fountain was erected in Van Cortlandt...

1950s Bronze Italian Relief Panel of a Discobulo
By Myron (Sculptor)
Located in Aci Castello, IT
The bronze panel depicts a discus thrower, capturing a dynamic moment of athleticism. This is inspired by the ancient Greek statue "Discobolus" (Discus Thrower) by Myron, an iconic representation of athletic grace and form. The figure's body is bent forward, with one arm reaching back to hold the discus, while the other arm stretches forward, illustrating the balance and tension in the moment just before the throw. This posture emphasizes muscular definition and the natural movement of the body in action, typical of ancient Greek athletic sculptures...

In 1927, he received a prestigious medal of honor for his exceptional work. A close companion of Max Le Verrier, Pierre collaborated extensively with the Le Verrier foundry, which produced numerous pieces of his art. In addition to his given name, he also employed two pseudonyms, Fayral and Guerbe, which were derived from the surnames of his mother and wife respectively. As a leading sculptor, Pierre's creations earned consistent praise for their exceptional craftsmanship and meticulous attention to anatomical precision. His artistic endeavors extended beyond sculpture, as he also designed pieces for Goldscheider in Paris, working under the label "La Stele." Pierre's versatility encompassed various mediums, including ivory, bronze, spelter, stone, wood, alabaster, and ceramics. Notably, he received artistic education alongside his friend Max Le Verrier, studying together at the Beaux Arts in Geneva. Throughout their lives, Pierre maintained strong friendships with both Marcel Bouraine and Max Le Verrier, with the latter's foundry being instrumental in producing many of Le Faguays' statues. The bond formed...
