About the Item

Highly rare and striking, this high relief Art Deco sculptural panel features a nude Venus figure at its center, surrounding by spouting fish and flying birds. The sculptor was Boris Blai, an important artist who studied in Kiev, St. Petersburg, Munich and Paris before settling in America in 1917. With the support of Stella Elkins Tyler, a wealthy philanthropist and amateur artist mentored by Blai, he cofounded and directed the Tyler School of Art, now part of Temple University, in 1935. Blai sculpted many realistic, stylized and experimental figural works over a career spanning several decades. This panel was created in 1956 from molded fiberglass imitating cast bronze with a deep blue patina. The piece is signed and dated in the lower righthand corner.
