C.1889 Original Antique American Gloekler Figural Iron Meat/Pot & Pan Rack

About the Item

,We are proud to offer this outstanding 100% original antique (circa 1889), Bernard Gloekler Co. of Pittsburgh, Pa, meat rack with an intricate bolted construction of wrought and cast iron. An arched bar with scrolled ends having 20*** wrought meat hooks; all suspended by a figural hanger formed by replicas of meat cutter's tools including a saw, a cleaver, a butcher’s knife, scraper and a cast bull finial, to boot. A shield-shaped cast identification plate that reads Gloekler, Baldwin, Lyon and Holt**, Boston, Mass, June 25, 1889, completes this awesome antique. **Baldwin, Lyon & Holt circa 1889; were grocers that sold canned goods and other provisions, located at 35 Fenton Street, Boston, Mass, The Gloekler Company began business in 1856, and remained in business until the 1970‘s. One of the leading makers of industrial equipment for the food industry, not only did they have a splendid catalog, but, they also made custom items for their clients. The company was so complete; they had their own blacksmith shop on site to make meat hooks, and other items for their scales. They also had the entire 7th floor of their 10 story building dedicated as a dimension mill where all the lumber was laid out, marked and cut to size, going into other departments according to requirements. Floors 8, 9 and 10 were solely used for storage, whereas the 6th was the sheet metal division and the 5th was finishing, where glass, lights, moldings and paint were installed. The basement held a complete modern machine shop with all the necessary lathes, presses, drills and other machinery for castings; the shared basement also held a tin plating plant, which means each part made down there was incorporated into one or more of the other divisions on one of the upper floors. A gorgeous piece of Americana, from a time we sadly won’t be seeing again anytime soon. Here is a little about Bernard Gloekler, and the firm he founded. Bernard Gloekler was born August 7, 1839, in Hausen, Wurtemberg, Germany, and received his education in the schools of his native land. In 1853 he emigrated to the United States, settling in Pittsburgh. In 1874 he purchased the entire business from John Wagner, who had for some years engaged in the manufacture of small butcher tools, sausage stuffers and meat rockers, such as were used in those days. Gloekler's foresight, thrift and energy, propelled their prominent use throughout the United States. Later on he added complete meat market equipment, manufactured refrigerators, counters, butcher blocks, etc. These were adopted quite extensively throughout the country. Soon thereafter, Gloekler added the manufacture of special refrigerators for hotels and restaurants and the manufacture of special extra heavy ranges, broilers, steam tables, vegetable steamers, soup kettles, etc. There was then practically nothing required in hotel, restaurant or butcher shop that was not carried by Bernard Gloekler Company. In consequence of the rapid increase of the business it was decided to incorporate the company in February 1905. ***Should you be interested in this spectacular meat rack but, the size is too large, we have a metal artist that can shorten the length without anyone except you and I knowing.
