Double Eagle Cartouche Plaque in Carved Limestone
About the Item
Reminiscent of a late 15th century coat of arms, this double eagle cartouche plaque has been hand-carved in limestone in Italy. A square top shield with a rounded base, known as “Iberian style”, has been emblazoned with a large double-headed eagle with wings displayed and expanded. An eagle with two heads and one body often refers to an empire, as both the Byzantine and Holy Roman Empires used the mythical creature as a symbol.
Above the heraldic display is a five-point open crown depicting stylized castle towers, known as a mural crown. Rising from the top of the crown is a pair of facing volute scrolls separated by a foliate element. A lozenge patterned background fills the interior of the scrolls with a leaf carving on each side. The crown is further flanked by a pair of large volutes that trail down into a foliate margent. Our double eagle cartouche plaque can be hung on an exterior or interior wall, making it an instant conversation piece.

Period Gothic Oak Trunk or Chest Façade from Picardie France, circa 1550
Located in Dallas, TX
Often when centuries-old trunks did not survive the passage of time, 19th-century menuisiers (French woodworkers) would salvage the surviving wood and carve new furniture such as desks and similar trunks. The facade was typically the most ornate section of these antique trunks, making intact frontages highly valued antiques. Hand-carved from oak in Picardie, France, circa 1550, this period Gothic architectural is a beautiful example of an antique trunk facade that was not incorporated into a more recent furnishing. Picardie is a former administrative region in northern France that is home to many Gothic cathedrals. The Amiens Cathedral (mid-13th century) is the largest standing cathedral in Europe and is truly a masterpiece of Gothic architecture.
Our trunk frontage has five vertically oriented inset panels embellished with various forms of Gothic tracery, including high-arching niches...
