About the Item

This masterwork of marquetry or inlaid wood -- in stunning, interlocking pieces of burled walnut and maple, mahogany and beech -- depicts Europa riding the bull, a classic story from Greek mythology. The artist was Andrew Szoeke, who was America's greatest practitioner of inlaid wood artistry in the Art Deco period, his only rivals being a group of artists in Sweden. Szoeke, a Hungarian-American artist, is also known for a series of felt applique and wood pieces that featured Zodiac symbols, again drawing from mythological sources. The piece is signed and dated on one edge.

Painted by Eugene Savage -- arguably, America's most successful and prolific muralist in the Art Deco style, with important surviving paintings dating from the 1920s to the 1950s -- this study was made for a Zodiac-themed ceiling mural. The round painting features a night sky jeweled with bands of stars, and featuring several mythological figures such as Helios with his chariot and Cornucopia.
