"Eurydice and Orpheus, " Midcentury Enameled Bronze Rondel with Nudes, France
About the Item
Boldly sculpted in gilded bronze and gorgeously enriched with several shades of enamel, including mother of pearl and ruby red, this midcentury rondel depicts two nude figures Orpheus and Eurydice with a lion rearing between them. Orpheus is carrying his lyre, which was known to bewitch and charm all living creatures, and Eurydice is shown falling to one side, probably referring to his loss of her a second time, when leaving the confines of Hades. The artist, Raymond Tschudin, was known for his Art Deco and midcentury sculptures, some in a rich combination of bronze and enamel, as here.
