About the Item

One of the finest repoussé bronze sculptures we have ever offered, this high style Art Deco bas relief rondel was made in 1930 by Willi Knapp. Knapp was born in Germany and came to America at age 22, first working in Chicago before settling in Milwaukee. He became known for his relief sculptures and paintings, and his best known work today is at the Schroeder Hotel. This bronze depicts the Classic mythological scene of Leda and the Swan, where Zeus took the form of a swan, seducing Leda the same night she lay with her husband Tyndareus. The offspring of that night included Helen of Troy as well as caster and Pollux. Here, the bronze has a beautiful golden patina.
