"Lonely Wanderers Gather Silently", Symbolist-Art Deco Sculptural Relief

About the Item

Quite extraordinary in concept and execution, this carved wood relief panel by one of Argentina's leading sculptors in the early 20th century depicts four nude male figures consoling each other and bathing in the rising smoke from an oil lamp on the ground below. The main panel with the nude figures has been given a bronze-toned finish, and below the relief is text that reads, mysteriously, "Lonely Wanderers Gather Silently before a Beautiful Death." The text may be referring to leftist and Communist protestors and rebels who were working to reform Argentinian government in the 1920s and 30s. The sculptor was Agustín Riganelli, who was denied an opportunity to exhibit in the salons organized by the National Commission of Fine Arts because of his leftist politics. Instead, he joined with other progressive artists to form "Grupo de Barracas" or "Artistas del Pueblo." He was given a number of commissions for public monuments and memorials, including a bust honoring the composer Julián Antonio Tomás Aguirre located in the Rose Garden of Palermo , Buenos Aires; and a monument to those who died on September 6, 1930 during the coup d'état in Argentina, located in Plaza Juan XXIII, Buenos Aires. The panel includes the artist's signature along one side, and shows an inscription on the reverse.
