About the Item

A large and extremely rare example of American bas relief sculpture, this bronze medal plated in gold was sculpted by Evelyn Beatrice Longman for the Loomis Athletic prize sponsored by the Loomis School in Windsor, Connecticut. Longman married the School's headmaster, Nathaniel Batch elder and moved to Windsor in 1920, which led to a series of commissions for monuments in Connecticut, including war memorials in Naugatuck and Hartford, and a bas relief frieze for the Federal building in Hartford. However, Longman is best known for her "Genius of Electricity" sculpture, a monumental male nude, which stood atop the AT&T Building on Broadway in New York for decades. In her youth, she was the only woman who served as an assistant to Daniel Chester French, and also assisted in the creation of sculpture for the Pan-American Exposition in 1901. We have seen only one other example of this medal, in the smaller 3-inch size. This 4-inch example was probably mounted on a plaque of some kind in its earlier years. It was struck by the Medallic Art Company, which was the largest and finest art medal company in the world.
