About the Item

This work was presented throughout 1962, successively at the Drian Galleries of London and then at the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris, as part of solo exhibitions. It illustrated an article dedicated to contemporary mosaic in the prestigious french decoration magazine Maison Française in August 1958with a photograph taken at the Artist's home. Maximilien Herzele (b. 1913 - d. 1969) is a French Mosaicist and Stainless Glass Artist. After Graduated from the National School of Fine Art of Paris and following an introductory stay in Ravenna, he began his carrer with Fernand Léger and Max Ingrand. With the former, he created a monumental mosaic for the Memorial Hospital of St Lo, and with the latter, the stained-glass windows for the baptistery of the Sainte Jeanne d'Arc Church in Gien. In a France undergoing reconstruction, a breeding ground for major architectural project and driven by a deep artistically revival, Herzele naturally found his place, particularly thanks to the special bounds he established wit Sonia Delaunay among others. He thus participated in the Réalités Nouvelles exhibitions, which the Artist initiated. His encounter with André Bloc was decisive. The visionary architect recognise in Herzele the artistic potential promoted by the Espace Group which he orchestrated round the greatest architects and visual artists of the time with the aim of supporting the ideas of constructivism and new-platonocism in the field of urban planning. This collaboration resulted in remarkable achievements, whether a 110 m2 mosaic for the Senate Palace in Tehran or the creation in 1954 of a relief wall for the University of Caracas. Navigating between interpreting the sketches of the great artists of the time and personal expression, he worked with the painter Jean Bazaine on a monumental mosaic for the UNESCO palace , while also creating panels, fountains and basins for the architect Claude Parent, with whom he formed a close friendship. Maximilien Herzele died prematurely in 1969, leaving behind a body of works as abundant as it was remarkable, helping to place the ancient art of mosaic at the heart of contemporary architecture.
